Therapy that feels

like a warm cup of coffee

Warm, comforting and energetic

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here

I’m Shannon McInchak, LMSW (she/her)

I’m a clinical social worker fully licensed to practice in Michigan. I specialize in generalized anxiety disorder, low self esteem, and healthy boundaries. My ideal clients are women and/or LGBTQ+, ages 25 - 55 who are struggling in a high stress job. I’m particularly passionate about helping people who work in healthcare, schools or social services manage boundaries as they confront social injustices and disparities in our systems.

Women and LGBTQ+ are particularly vulnerable to anxiety and stress. Gender expectations present unique challenges in professional careers and in relationships. Women are under constant pressure, pressure to take care of everyone and everything. When they do try to set boundaries, they’re accused of being selfish and cold, either by themselves or others. LGBTQ+ have to be hypervigilant in this homophobic world. Self expression and authenticity are important aspects of self esteem, but queer people are not always safe to do so. Many are navigating coming out and fearing rejection or hostility from their families, colleagues, and the general public.

I find it deeply rewarding to hold space for these difficult topics and the complex emotions that arise. I have over 10 years of experience as a therapist and 15 in social work. My preferred modalities are a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Family Systems. In 2026 I started offering Internal Family Systems Therapy and completed 20 hours of live training under the supervision of Bonnie Weiss, LCSW, and world renowned IFS expert.

You might be wondering if therapy is right for you

You’ve probably been dealing with these feelings for a long time and they fluctuate, depending on the amount of stress in your life.  You might be wrestling with thoughts like:

Is it really that bad?

Can therapy even help?

I can get by on my own

You don’t have to wait to hit a breaking point to see a therapist

Most people wait for their problems to get worse before they make the decision to go to therapy.  Most of us would rather ignore our problems or try to solve them on our own. In the era of Google, Instagram, TikTok, Chat GPT, etc. it is tempting to just try and find a solution so you can get on with your life.  It's totally human to want to avoid pain.

You might feel like going to therapy is an admission of failure or a weakness.  Maybe you're skeptical, thinking it won't really help you.  You might be afraid to really examine your relationships, fearing you'll be told to end or leave the relationship.  Maybe you're afraid of what people will think of you.

Therapy provides an emotional release, which will help you think more clearly

Therapy gives you a space to release pent up emotions and express yourself.  The process helps you gain clarity and insight in ways you just can't get when you talk to others or think about your problems.

Therapy will reveal the underlying sources of your pain

We all have painful experiences that have a way of sticking with us.  Over time the experience becomes a distant memory, but they become unconscious sources of pain. Therapy provides an opportunity to process past experiences and gain insight into how they affect you now.

Therapy keeps you on track and accountable

Having a space dedicated to you helps you identify and pursue meaningful goals.  Coming to sessions regularly will keep you on track and accountable to those goals.  Reaching your potential helps you build confidence and develop skills that will make you more resilient to future stress.

Therapy helps you feel less lonely and isolated

Connecting with another person regularly will obviously help you feel less alone, but it's more than that.  The bond you build with your therapist is unlike any other.  It's a deeply intimate, yet professional relationship with no obligation.

Meet your Therapist

I decided to start my therapy practice because I cared about providing good therapy.  I knew I could only provide good therapy if I was taken care of.

Unfortunately, too many mental health and healthcare practices are more concerned with generating revenue than they are about the clients or the providers.  Working in non profits, community mental health, and primary care always ended up the same for me – too many clients, little time to work with them, and feeling frustrated and tired.  Many practices expect therapists to work with any client that walks through the door, often expecting therapists to see 7 - 10 clients daily.  There's little emphasis on good fit and more on productivity.

This can leave people with terrible therapy experiences like having a therapist that talks too much, shares too much about their problems, or cancels appointments frequently.  You might walk away from a session wondering - was that even therapy?  Even worse you might have a therapist that tries to boss you around, judges you, or breaks your trust by violating your privacy.

Opening my own therapy practice has allowed me to have the freedom and flexibility to do great work.  I really enjoy working with people long term and at a slower pace.  I like to build relationships with my clients based on mutual trust, safety and respect. I'm not in this to maximize profit, so I work part time and keep my caseload relatively small (no more than 15 clients a week).  I prefer to do fulfilling work, while maximizing my free time for other meaningful pursuits.
